The approach in peer recovery has key differences to the approach taken by a treatment provider. The Peer Recovery Specialist has responsibility for integrating the lived experience into clients’ treatment goals and services by practicing a strengths-based and harm reduction approach to recovery and wellness.

The Peer Recovery Specialist has responsibility for integrating the lived experience into clients’ treatment goals and services by practicing a strengths-based and harm reduction approach to recovery and wellness.

Overview

The Senior Peer Recovery Specialist will serve as a model, mentor, advocate, and motivator for clients in the behavioral health department. This position integrates the lived experience into clients’ treatment goals and services by practicing a strengths-based and harm reduction approach to recovery and wellness. This position also provides support and mentorship to peer recovery staff across departments.

The addictions counselor utilizing the harm reduction approach will provide SUD assessment, education, counseling on substance use disorders, chemical dependency, relapse prevention, and anger management/coping skills, to high school students (and their families) within a BCPS (Baltimore City Public Schools) during the school day.

The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) provides support, guidance, and advocacy to individuals and families on the recovery continuum with addiction, mental illness, co-occurring disorders, and family/allies of behavioral health. Utilizing their lived experience, they offer empathy, understanding, and practical assistance to aid individuals in their recovery journey. This position will afford recovery support needs and refer individuals/families to the appropriate community resources that are beyond the scope of these services.

This position is onsite Monday - Friday, 11am to 7pm

Peer Recovery Specialists are individuals with the lived experience of substance abuse, mental, and/or behavioral health challenges.  They provide a safe, supportive and confidential environment in which peers serve as role models for recovery from drug abuse,  provide linkage to community resources, and promote overall wellness.
