Research consistently confirms that social anchors play a pivotal role in influencing various aspects of our lives, encompassing the journey of recovery from substance use and mental health challenges. These anchors are quantified using Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and Recovery Capital. As peers and recovery coaches, our role is to assist individuals in their current recovery journey and pursuit of recovery by conscientiously considering their Social Determinants of Health. This training aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to:
- Grasp the concept of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
- Learn effective techniques for providing SDOH-informed recovery support.
- Establish actionable SDOH goals.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completing this training, participants will be able to:
1. Understand Social Determinants of Health (SDOH):
- Define and explain the concept of SDOH.
- Recognize social factors that can impact an individual's recovery journey.
2. Grasp the Role of Recovery Capital:
- Define recovery capital and its significance in the recovery process.
- Identify the interplay between SDOH and recovery capital.
3. Offer Effective SDOH-Informed Recovery Support:
- Understand the role active listening skills play in better understanding the needs of individuals in recovery.
- Apply a strengths-based approach to recovery coaching.
- Demonstrate the ability to address SDOH-related barriers with empathy and resourcefulness.
4. Set SDOH Goals:
- Facilitate SMART goal setting with individuals in recovery.
- Collaboratively plan and adjust recovery goals based on SDOH considerations.
5. Navigate Challenges and Ethical Considerations:
- Adhere to ethical guidelines for recovery coaches.
- Handle challenging situations and maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness when working with diverse populations.

- Integrate SDOH-informed approaches into their coaching practice.
