The SASSI is a screening tool - not a diagnostic assessment tool. Sub-clinical helpers (such as, peer specialists and forensic peer specialists) may administer and score the SASSI while under appropriate supervision. The SASSI identifies individuals who have a high probability of being determined to have any type of substance use disorder, including alcohol. The SASSI has a demonstrated overall accuracy rate of 94% in identifying whether individuals have a high or low probability of being found to have a SUD. The SASSI has broad utility and should be administered during the screening and intake phases while the ASAM should be administered during the assessment phase.
