Co-Hosted by the Mental Health Empowerment Agency, Black People Die By Suicide Too, and EveryMind, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a 1.5- to 2-hour, virtual or in-person, suicide prevention training program designed to empower individuals to recognize the warning signs of suicide, engage in conversation, and effectively connect individuals in crisis to appropriate help. The primary objective of QPR is to equip participants with the skills and confidence to intervene when they encounter someone exhibiting suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

QPR training follows a structured and practical approach to suicide prevention, emphasizing the importance of three key actions: questioning, persuading, and referring. The training aims to break down the stigma surrounding suicide, providing participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to engage in open and non-judgmental conversations about mental health. By teaching participants how to recognize warning signs and communicate effectively, QPR creates a supportive community that can actively contribute to suicide prevention efforts.

Participants will learn to:
• Recognize Warning Signs: Participants learn to identify the verbal and behavioral cues associated with
suicide risk, enabling them to notice when someone may be in crisis.

• Questioning: QPR emphasizes the importance of asking direct and caring questions to assess an
individual's risk of suicide. Participants are guided on how to approach these conversations with sensitivity and without judgment.

• Persuading: The training provides strategies for persuading someone to seek professional help and
support. Participants learn to communicate empathy and encouragement effectively, fostering a sense of hope in individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts.

• Referring: QPR equips participants with the knowledge to connect those in crisis with appropriate
resources and professionals. This may involve guiding individuals to mental health professionals, crisis
helplines, or other support services.

• Building a Supportive Community: Beyond individual intervention skills, QPR aims to create a community
of individuals who are informed and committed to suicide prevention. By fostering an environment where
mental health is openly discussed, the training helps reduce stigma and increase overall awareness.

QPR is a valuable tool for anyone interested in playing a role in suicide prevention, providing practical skills that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those struggling with thoughts of suicide.

AUDIENCE: Appropriate for someone of any background and amount of background knowledge surrounding mental health.
