Overview

Trauma is the Gateway Drug is a 2-hour workshop that introduces substance abuse counselors and Peer Specialists to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their relationship to substance use, misuse, and abuse. The training includes a brief refresher on the mechanics and processes of trauma; discusses the difference between Simple and Complex Trauma, their impacts on survivors, and the barriers they create for recovery; and the link between trauma and substance use, misuse, and abuse. The main focus is on learning about ACEs and how these experiences significantly increase the risk factors for substance use and addiction, and the persistence of influence when ACEs are not addressed appropriately in treatment. Each participant receives a flash drive upon completion of the workshop with a library of current articles, fact sheets, research, and guides to utilize in their recovery practice.
