This cultural competency training is designed for peer recovery specialists and recovery coaches who are supporting LGBTQ+ youth in their wellness and recovery journeys. Through open dialogue, practical tools, and real-world examples, this training deepens participants’ understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, the "coming out" process, and the unique challenges LGBTQ+ youth face—especially those navigating recovery, trauma, or systemic barriers.

Participants will gain tools to foster safer, affirming spaces and build authentic, trauma-informed relationships grounded in respect, empathy, and cultural humility.

This training has been offered to peers working in behavioral health, substance use recovery, foster care, juvenile justice, shelters, spiritual communities, and more.

What You Will Learn

Through interactive activities and guided reflection, participants will explore their own biases, increase their cultural awareness, and develop stronger skills to support LGBTQ+ youth in recovery. You will be able to:

  • Describe what it means to be an active and informed ally to LGBTQ+ youth

  • Understand and apply inclusive terminology related to gender identity and sexual orientation

  • Identify the specific challenges LGBTQ+ youth may experience in home, school, and recovery settings

  • Learn strategies to create trauma-informed, affirming, and supportive environments for LGBTQ+ youth in recovery

  • Discuss the services offered by The Trevor Project and how youth can access them

  • Reflect on ways to recognize and challenge personal and systemic bias in peer support spaces
